Examples of Cameo Character
Okay, this is an incredibly pedantic pet peeve, but:
Foreshadowing is when media hints at future events in a way that accomplishes one or both of the following -
1. Shaping the audience’s general expectations for the story without giving away specific plot points; or
2. Laying the groundwork to render an otherwise-implausible revelation later on reasonable.
It’s not just any appearance or forward reference regardless of content or context. For example, if a particular character has a blink-and-you’ll-miss it cameo in the background of an early scene, or has a brief and totally innocuous interaction with the protagonist, and that same character later turns out to be the main villain, that’s not foreshadowing. Nothing was hinted at by the earlier appearance, and the audience was given no reason to believe that particular nameless extra would be important.
It’s not enough for a given element merely to appear prior to revealing its significance. The narrative has to actually engage with it in a way that constructively hints at its future significance. Absent such engagement, it’s not foreshadowing; at best, it’s dramatic irony.
reasons to read the upside of unrequited:
- the main het romance and the side wlw romance are really, really sweet
- like tooth-rottingly sweet, i can’t even think about them without grinning
- the protag is straight, but pretty much every important person in her life is a queer woman. there’s seriously SO MUCH wlw representation. lesbians, bi women and pan women! queer women of colour! teen wlw and older wlw! wlw as mothers and wives and girlfriends! queer characters & relationships completely normalised and accepted by everyone!
- also so many jewish characters, including a jewish protagonist and a jewish love interest
- a fat protagonist who isn’t defined by her fatness
- a really beautiful relationship between two sisters which explores the heartbreaking process of growing up and losing that closeness siblings have when they’re young
- the most painfully realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be young and scared of rejection that i’ve ever read
- cameo appearances by characters from becky’s first book! (which is all kinds of awesome and should also definitely be on your radar but it’s not necessary to read it first.)
- the main character’s love interest says that kissing her was the best thing that has ever happened to his mouth, including cadbury mini eggs and honestly that’s the most romantic thing i’ve ever read
- i mean the whole book is this adorable it’s nauseatingly cute and you should read it asap
The fall is longer than Natasha expects.
It’s tears cold on her face, teeth bitten all the way through her lip and the taste of copper in her mouth; she’s falling and falling and then, bracing for impact—she wakes up.
Turns out I was mad enough about Endgame that I had to spite-write forty-one thousand words about Natasha and her wonderful life to get it all out, so: enjoy, I guess, I’m gonna go lie down
fanfic culture has done so many good, amazing things for young writers BUT
it’s gotten to the point people don’t even know they’re writing an original story anymore and thats kind of sad?? like, i see it a lot with roleplayers especially.
“i wrote a fic based on my dnd/pathfinders/whatever campaign and added some og characters and a friend’s character cameos too!”
“so i have this character from pathfinders that i tweaked a little and then added another character from world of darkness with some different traits and THEN i thought it would be cool to throw in a star trek inspired character and make a fic out of it!”
honey that is not a fic. that is an original story. own it. be proud of it. you just created something brand new from your noggin!!! sure it might be based on something, but most fiction is. stories spring forth out of inspiration from other stories, or from liking how a certain world was set up in general so you use that as a base and then craft it into your own.
yall are out here making amazing original stories and building worlds and acting like it’s just silly fanfiction when it’s super awesome original fiction!!!!!
anyway i don’t really know what the point is but these writers are wonderful and i hope they realize that!!
When I die I'll sacrifice more than enough
An unrequited love, The love you never find
A villain is doing wonderful things
Flower petals drifted in the wind, though there were no flowers on the trees, and the trees themselves were golden and only existed in the corners of his vision. It was as if the place was bathed in sunlight, but there was no sun - the sky was the gentle colors of the first edges of sunset, and the whole thing was just bright. The air was filled with a gentle, pleasant fragrance he couldn’t place.
“Who are you?” said a stern woman’s voice.
“Mo Xuanyu. I thought I’d be dead.”
“You are.” The woman looked down at him imperiously. She was swathed in rich blue. Yu-furen, he came to understand he knew. The hilt of a dagger protruded from her chest. “You took your own life, and now your soul is returned to creation. Did you think it would have no use for it?”
